ENROLLMENT AND RETENTION RATE SHIFT

Changing Demographics in Higher Education

The demographics of students attending colleges and universities throughout the United States have changed over the past two decades, a trend expected to continue. In particular, the number of Hispanic, African American, first-generation, and low-income students enrolling in colleges and universities throughout the United States has seen steady growth in recent decades.

However, while colleges and universities continue to enroll in increasing numbers of diverse student populations, there remains a persistent gap in the educational outcomes of these students relative to non-diverse student populations. Institutions of higher learning can reverse this trend by examining their policies, procedures, and practices and questioning their infrastructure to ensure they are taking equity-mindedness approaches to student achievement.

The benefits of improved outcomes of minoritized student populations include:

  • Increased diverse student enrollment and retention.

  • Increased student tuition revenue.

  • Increased State’s share of instruction (for public institutions)

  • Positive school reputation related to “sincere” support of diverse students.
